Holland High School senior, 16, wins National Merit Scholarship
Rachna Goswami is a high school valedictorian, a former first-chair cellist for the Holland High Symphony Orchestra, a National Merit scholar and an aspiring neuroscientist.
And she’s only 16.
“I have an uncle who is a neurosurgeon, and that’s how I got the idea anyway,” said Goswami, a Holland High School senior. “I guess the appeal for me is it’s not bad to be an astronaut or to go explore the ocean, but just to know about ourselves can take us a long way.”

Holland Mayor Al McGeehan presented Goswami with the Mayor’s Youth Recognition Award Wednesday, May 21. Goswami was also recently named the recipient of a $2,500 scholarship from the National Merit Scholarship Corporation.
“I knew that I was a National Merit finalist before then, but not all the National Merit finalists get scholarships,” she said. “I was very excited. With college prices being so high, and the cost of college, it’s going to be a big help.”
She plans to attend the University of Michigan Honors College and to major in Neuroscience.
The National Merit Scholarship Corporation distributes awards to students based on their performance on the PSAT and SAT tests. About half of National Merit finalists are expected to receive scholarships by the end of the 2008 competition.

“Rachna is very bright and motivated student,” said Carl VanFaasen, Goswami’s chemistry teacher. “She not only has a great deal of natural ability, but she works hard to maximize that ability as well.”

Goswami said that she became more interested in neuroscience after participating in a summer research project through Hope College’s REACH program. She stayed in the program for two summers and enjoyed it. Some of her work ended up being published in Physiology and Behavior, a cognitive and behavioral neuroscience journal.
“To be honest, now I’m working at J.C. Penney and it’s not the same,” she said. “I’d much rather be doing research and making money than folding clothes.”
Other students who have received the $2,500 scholarship so far include Alexis Van Zalen of Holland Christian High School and Andrew Webster of West Ottawa High School. Kiri Sunde of Hamilton High School also received a scholarship funded by her college through a National Merit program.
